How many languages are spoken in the World today? Approximately 7100 different beautiful cultural languages are spoken today. Top ten languages spoken in order are;
1. English 1.3 mil
2 Mandarin 1.1 mil
3. Hindi 615 mil
4 Spanish 534 mil
5. French 280 mil
6. Arabic 274 mil
7. Bengali 265 mil
8. Russian 258 mil
9. Portuguese 199 mil
10. Indonesian 170 mil
These are just the top 10 of over 7100 languages spoken. Imagine the diversity. Where did all of these languages come from? Why don’t we all speak the same language? Wouldn’t it be easier if we did? The answer to these questions may surprise you.
In the book of Genesis, Noah and his family start anew after the great flood. The growth of new civilization was described in Genesis:
Genesis 10:32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their nations: and by these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
Genesis 11:1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech.
So there was a time on earth where everyone spoke the same language. What happened?
Genesis 11:2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.
The people banded together with an idea to build a tower that would reach the heavens and therefore they could be as God.
Genesis 11:4 And they said, Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.
Clearly this was not God’s plan and he had to put a stop to the tower build.

Genesis 11:6 And the Lord said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do.
11:7 Go to, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another’s speech.
11:8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city.
This clearly answers the question, why are there so many languages used on earth today. God did not want one universal language as the temptation to sin and go against God’s word would be greater if all spoke the same language. This was solved by “confounding” their language that they may not understand one another’s speech. As the people were scattered among the world, the languages and iterations of language would transcend into what we have today which is approximately 7000 different languages.
As I have posted previously, two of the gifts from the Holy Spirit are language related. The first is the gift to speak in different languages they had not known before. Another gift the Holy Spirit gives is to understand and explain what was said in those languages.
If you have the ability to speak and interpret different languages, it may be that you have been granted a gift from the Holy Spirit.
Thank you God Almighty for once again demonstrating your love by continuing to put your miracles front and center for us to marvel at.
Peace, Love and Joy to all. In Jesus precious name, Amen.
