A common question arises regarding Jesus cruxifixction. Why did he have to die? Why did the Son of God have to die? Many people can’t comprehend that a Father would let his own Son die. And not only die, but suffer a painful, horrible, excruciating death in front of his detractors and loved ones alike. Did God have any other choices? Surely there had to be another way. But in God’s view, there was no other way. What we really need to put into perspective here is that God’s reasoning was his overwhelming love for us and his desire to have as many of us join him in heaven with everlasting life. John 3:16; “For God so loved the world, he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believe in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.”
Gods Law
In the Old Testament God had established the Ten Commandments through Moses and used those commandments as his law. God’s Law was the law, and if it was broken, forgiveness and atonement was gained through animal sacrifices. Over a period of time, God, in his eminent wisdom decided that animal sacrifices were not sufficient to pay for violations of God’s law, or to show appreciation to God the creator and our Father. In light of this, God had decided that he would send the Messiah ( Jesus ) to save the world. And God intended to save the world. To save the world from sin and forgiveness of sin by offering his son as the ultimate sacrifice to pay for our sins. Romans 6:23 “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Why did Jesus have to die?
Jesus was the perfect unblemished lamb, the only perfect sacrifice that could save generations upon generations of sinners. Jesus was only 33 years when he was crucified on the cross at Calvary. In his short life on earth, he was the perfect man, the perfect human. He committed no sins, but he was a teacher of God’s word, he performed miracles of healing, miracles of saving lives, miracles of forgiveness, and miracles of resurrecting lives.
Jesus dying on the cross was both horrific and sad, the effects of his death on the cross that day, live on today, some 2000 years later. Several things happened immediately and during his death on the cross.
5 events that happened after Jesus died on the Cross.
The Sky became dark during the day.
1. The first event was the sky became dark, with no light. This happened in the middle of the day, and was a sign to all that this was not acceptable to God the father that his son was suffering on the cross. Luke 23:44-45 “It was now the about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, for the sun stopped shining.”
A great earthquake shook the world during and after Jesus death.
2. The second event was a great earthquake which rocked the city of Jerusalem, and as building toppled in the city, the red curtain in the priests tower was torn in half and floated to the ground. Matthew 27: 51 ” At that moment, the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks split.” The dark sky and the earthquake was God’s anger at his own people who would kill his son, for committing no crime. This sent fear into the Jews and Romans alike, as they realized they had just killed the son of God.
The Red Curtain his torn, changing how we worship forever
3. The third event was when the red curtain was torn, it meant that the high priests were no longer considered the intermediate communicators between the people and God, that now communication to God would be through his Son Jesus Christ only.
Jesus releases the Holy Spirit for all mankind.
4. When Jesus died, he released the Holy Spirit into the world, for all mankind to to accept, if in fact they believed that Jesus was the true son of God. Matthew 27: 50 ” And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up the spirit.”
The Holy Spirit is the 3rd component of the Holy Trinity. the Father( God ), the Son ( Jesus Christ ), and the Holy Spirit ( Jesus Spirit ).
If we accept Jesus as our Lord and Savior, and recognize him as the son of God, the Holy Spirit will be active in our lives as our teacher and our comforter for all eternity! The Holy Spirit could only be released to us once Jesus died.
Jesus shows us there is life after death, and a heaven to return to after death
5. Jesus death also proved that there is life after death and that there is a Heaven waiting for us. Three days after he died on the cross, Jesus rose from death and was seen conversing with his disciples, and Mary Magdalene to name a few. Jesus death also proved that there is a heaven, as after spending a few days in Jerusalem after he was resurrected, Jesus was seen by his disciple and others elevating to heaven and disappearing into the clouds above. Luke 16:19 “After the Lord Jesus had spoken to them, he was taken up into heaven, and sat at the right hand of God.”
Conclusion
God made the choice to sacrifice his Son’s life on earth, because he loved us and he wants us to join him in heaven. We only need to believe in Jesus and follow him to have everlasting life in heaven after we have expired here on earth.
How do we do this?
Start now. Pray to Jesus for forgiveness. Repent of your sins to him. Start reading God’s word, the Bible daily. Mediate on his word. Form a relationship with Jesus and speak to him; he will answer you!!!
Not sure where to start in the Bible? Start at the beginning. Read the first 5 books of the Old Testament, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy. These first 5 books are known as “The Law” Spend as much time as you need to truly absorb God’s word.
After completing the first 5 books of the Old Testament, read the first 4 books of the New Testament; Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. These are known as the Gospels and are documented passages of Jesus time on earth, told by two of his disciples, Matthew and John, and two of his followers, Mark and Luke.
